School Experience Programme

Gaining classroom experience before starting your initial teacher training (ITT) can help you be sure that a career in teaching is right for you. It can also support your application for ITT, by spending some time in a classroom and speaking to experience teachers and school staff.

The School Experience Programme (SEP) offers classroom experience in a secondary school. The duration is flexible (1 to 10 days); this will be agreed between you and your host school.

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check may be required. This will be organised by the school and could impact on the length of your placement.

You will need to meet the programme requirements to be able to apply for the School Experience Programme (SEP).

You will be able to apply for the SEP if you hold a first class or 2:1 degree and are considering teaching secondary maths, physics, chemistry, modern foreign languages and computer science.

You can also apply as an undergraduate if you:

  1. are in your final year of studying for a degree in one of these subjects

  2. are interested in teaching one of these subjects

  3. are predicted at least a 2:1 degree

How to Apply

You will need to register with the National College for Teaching & Leadership, if you have not already done so, before you can apply for the School Experience Programme (SEP).

Once you have registered you can apply for the SEP quickly and easily by calling the Teaching Line on 0800 389 2500.

The Teaching Line will contact you once you have registered and it has been confirmed that you meet the requirements.

You can contact the Teaching Line on freephone 0800 389 2500 or by emailing – if you have any questions about your application. Please note that school experience placements are subject to meeting the eligibility requirements and availability in your local or preferred area.

You can still arrange your own school experience if you do not meet the requirements by contacting The Duston School Teaching Alliance by emailing -
