NQT's – your first year of teaching

Every teacher awarded qualified teacher status (QTS) is required to complete an Induction programme, usually lasting one academic year, on taking up their first teaching post in a maintained school in England or Wales.

Completing your NQT year is an important aspect of your teaching career. Your NQT training programme should enable you to build on and extend the knowledge and skills developed during the Initial Teaching Training and provide the foundation for continuing professional development.

As an NQT, the support received through training and development should be tailored to your individual needs and circumstances and should provide you with opportunities to

  1. Show your potential
  2. Make rapid advancement towards excellence in teaching; and
  3. Begin to make a real impact on the school and the students

To complete Induction, you need to evidence progress over a minimum of six terms or equivalent.

You will be assessed throughout your NQT year using the Teacher Standards. These apply to all teachers as they form part of the framework of professional standards for teachers.

At the end of your Induction period, you will be assessed using the Teacher Standards and a judgement will be made to see if you have met them.
